The two piece Virginia buckle shown here has a direct, unbroken chain of ownership to renowned old time collector, Mac Mason’s personal collection. The chain of ownership will be provided to the buyer. The buckle bears the Virginia coat of arms, Virtue standing over a defeated Tyranny, surrounded by Virginia’s motto; “Sic Semper Tyrannis” which translates to “Thus Ever to Tyrants.” The tongue and wreath portion are made from cast brass. The disc portion is die-struck brass. This two piece sword belt pattern was manufactured for sale to Virginia’s prewar militia officers and to her War time officers. Note the reversed ribbons, it is identical to Mullinax’s Expanded Edition, plate 405 and is dated circa 1860-65. The buckle has had a lot of use and shows extensive wear and there is an ever so slight bend to the top right edge of the disc. It is virtually perfect and has a pleasing untouched, natural patina! |
