     The two piece waist belt buckle shown here bears the unofficial state seal of South Carolina, the Palmetto tree.  The buckle is made of sand cast brass, with a lathe turned wreath back.  It has a very high quality, finely stamped silver palmetto soldered to the central disc.

     This close looped style is believed to be of English origin and was imported for sale to the pre-war South Carolina State Troops, which would go on to become the backbone of the South Carolina Volunteers.

The buckle has a deep untouched patina.  A rare and beautiful buckle!
