This is Colonel John Shackleford (Shack) Green.  Shack Green was born in Rappahannock County, Virginia on June 19, 1817.  He was living the peaceful life of a farmer when Lincoln’s illegal demand for Virginia to supply troops to subjugate her sister states forced Virginia to take sides.  Naturally, she sided with the Constitution and refused to make war on American citizens, instead she withdrew from such an unholy alliance on April 17, 1861 and prepared to defend herself against Lincoln’s attacks.  Shack Green immediately answered her call and April 22nd found him in command of Company B, 6th Virginia Cavalry.   Only seven days later he was promoted to Major of the Regiment.  On June 6, 1862 the Major was severely wounded in an engagement at Harrisburg, Virginia.  The following month he was promoted to Lt. Colonel of the Regiment.  Two months later he was wounded again and taken prisoner at Paris, Virginia.  He was back with his unit again by the following September; the record shows he was tried and acquitted for disobedience of orders.  He served faithfully until on April 5, 1864 he resigned from the service.  He never officially rose beyond the rank of Lt. Colonel; however, he wears the uniform of a full colonel.  He survived the War and lived in Norfolk, Virginia where he died and was buried in the Cedar Grove Cemetery on January 1, 1891.
