The framed Carte De Visite of General Lee shown here has a little more history than most. Around the year two thousand, I personally purchased this CDV in the frame along with a war time Jeb Stuart letter, out of a family home in Richmond, Virginia’s near west end. The CDV shows General Lee in his General’s uniform and has a bold and well preserved ink signature that is second to none. I thought perhaps that there was something written on the back, so I unframed it. General Lee had written nothing on the back, but the address of the framer was on the frame. The framer was on Main St. Richmond, though I do not recall the exact address, nor does it matter. Knowing that the image was framed and remained in Richmond, it was likely signed there as well. I suppose the signature has remained so strong because it was framed during the Victorian era. |
